Human Planet
Role: Art Director and Editor
Client: BBC Studios
Stakeholders: BBC Earth, BBC Books, Discovery
Campaign assets: stills collection for global campaign inc’ merchandising and exhibition event
While working at BBC Studios, I managed the stills photography for the landmark natural history series Human Planet.
Unlike most BBC natural history productions, the series commissioned photographer Timothy Allen to travel with the film crew on more than 30 shoots around the world, capturing an extraordinary range of cultures, landscapes and human stories. Over the course of the production, Tim delivered more than 22,000 images.
I led the extensive editing process, spending several months reviewing the full archive and carefully curating the final collection of programme stills, ultimately selecting just under 200 images that best represented the scale and visual ambition of the series.
Once the final image set was established, I supported the wider publicity campaign, contributing to the development of the accompanying coffee table book and helping to deliver an extensive international print and online campaign. This included curating a major exhibition of the photography presented at BBC Showcase.
The resulting collection represents some of the most powerful documentary photography I have had the privilege to work with.
